Sorcerous cardgame Balatro and slot machine RPG Luck Be A Landlord have been reclassified as fit for people aged 12 years and over by the Pan European Games Information board, after they were initially slapped with an 18 rating for "glamorising... the simulation of gambling".

PEGI have made the change following a successful appeal against the 18 rating by Balatro's European publisher Sold Out and Luck Be A Landlord's Switch publisher Fangamer. They're also going to develop "a more granular set of classification criteria" for games that reference gambling, to distinguish jingling parodies of rentier capitalism from the one arm bandits found in actual casinos.

I often said that I made this game for myself and that I wasn't expecting anything to become of it. Seeing so many people connect with Balatro has overwhelmingly filled this year with joy, so from the bottom of my heart thank you to all players that decided to give this game a shot. Gentle reader, I have previously written exactly two boob-related articles in my life. One was a cheesy round-up of the best manboobs in video games for Green Man Gaming's long-vanished blog. It was published sometime in 2010, and IIRC, pre-reboot Kratos came out on top. I think/hope it still exists somewhere in the apparatus of Green Man Gaming, hidden beneath the retailer's veneer of respectability like a barrel of radioactive waste. The other boob article was a piece for OXM about Ken Levine saying that he wished people would stop fixating on Elizabeth's cleavage in Bioshock Infinite - a complaint we might consider slightly hypocritical, given the character's visual design.

Now it's time for boob article number 3: some modder has given 122 of the 150 Jokers in cardgame Balatro big chests. This extends from visibly human Jokers to Joker concepts that shouldn't, strictly speaking, have the capacity for boobage. The banana card has boobs, for example. The credit card card has boobs. Balatro, which was a runner up for The Game Awards' Game of the Year award, is certainly a popular game. However, for months now it's been plagued with a black mark of sorts on digital storefronts. This, a Pegi 18 rating indicating the game is for adults only, remains after months of pushback, despite other games with real gambling staying up at a 3+ rating. Earlier today, the solo dev of Balatro brought issue to the issue yet again.

LocalThunk statement

I wanted to give an update on the Balatro localization project. We recently started using Crowdin to help improve the localization of Balatro - both by allowing suggested changes to our existing languages and to add new languages suggested by the community. We received a ton of requests to add these new languages but I messed up thinking that this would be okay to delegate to the community.

After seeing the response to this, I know now that we made a few mistakes. We never intended to use this platform as a cost saving measure and were primarily concerned about giving players a better tool to contribute feedback on our existing paid translations. Having players translate new languages was also a mistake, that job should have gone to a localization agency.

We are going to pause this project to find a fairer and more ethical way to improve the language support in Balatro. I screwed up, I'll take the blame but I want to make sure we get this thing right. I'm literally a fool after all!

We're introducing a new localization platform to improve the translations in Balatro - and we need your help.

CrowdIn is a website where you can contribute to the translations of different strings of text, and work together with other contributors to get the most accurate translations into the game.

You can join the Project on CrowdIn.

How will it work?

Once you are signed up to the platform, you'll be able to see what translations have been submitted, and add your translations.
If you find a translation already submitted that you agree with, then you can vote for that submission. The translations with the most amount of votes will be accepted and inserted into the game. We encourage you to review the translations submitted before submitting your own - this is a collaborative project, not a competition!

Will I be credited?

If your translation is accepted, you will credited in the game. We will use your CrowdIn username for your credit, so choose your username carefully.

What languages are there?

We are looking for volunteers to help further improve the current translations for:

• Italian

• Spanish (Spain)

• Spanish (Latin America)

• Polish

• Portuguese (Brazil)
