Ahoy, captains!

Here’s a small patch with a few improvements. We’re also very grateful for all your feedback and comments on the latest devblog post.

One known issue remains in this build, but we’re already looking into it and plan to fix it in a future update.

Thank you for staying with us, and stay tuned for more news.

Patch Notes, version: 0.10.0.8

Fixed an issue where projectiles could pass through ships without registering hits at long distances.

Improved Japanese localization.

Known issue: A random bug may cause volleys fired from the front cannons to deal no damage, even when cannonballs clearly hit the ship’s hull. This will be fixed in a future update.

Windrose's new Ashlands biome will expand your pirate escapades "significantly in scope" PCGamesN
Now that the post-launch waters have settled, Kraken Express is steering the ship towards its first big Windrose update. The pirate survival game exploded onto the scene in April in fittingly dramatic fashion - racking up more than two million sales and even briefly outstripping the pace of the mighty Rust on Steam. That's a lot of adventurers ready for their next outing across the water, and the studio promises that our journey to the Windrose Ashlands will see "the main story and side quests grow significantly in scope."

Windrose might get wind PC Gamer
s a survival game, Windrose is an extremely forgiving one. Your weapons and gear never degrade. If your pirate ship sinks you can rebuild it with a mere 20 pieces of wood. You can't die of hunger or thirst, and your NPC pirate crew, well… they can't die at all...

Windrose Devblog: Ashlands (WIP) steam_community_announcements
DISCLAIMER: We’re talking about plans, and plans may change. We tend to experiment a lot. If something does not work well for the game, we discard it. Prototyping a great idea can drastically change how it feels once we actually playtest it. Simply put, if something isn’t great, we tend to pivot it into something a lot better. That’s the nature of development, and it applies to the plans described below. In the end, these are general thoughts we’ll continue expanding on as development progresses.

Ahoy, captains! It’s been a while since the Early Access release, thank you for making it incredible!

Now that most of the post-release tasks have been addressed, we’re hard at work on Windrose’s first major content update, currently titled “Ashlands.” While development is still in its early stages, we wanted to share our general plans and give you an idea of what we’re aiming for. As always, the exact scope of the update may change as development progresses.

As for our longer-term plans, those are still taking shape. Truth be told, we don’t have them fully locked in yet. While delivering Early Access, we spared no effort to make and patch the game as well as we could, and it took a real toll on us. As a result, this part had to be pushed aside for a while. Now that the game is live, feedback has poured in, and we are better equipped with your ideas and a clearer understanding of what Windrose could become in the future.

In that sense, Windrose is shaped not only by our own ideas, but also by your feedback and experiences. Our goal is to first deliver Ashlands at the level of quality we expect from ourselves, learn from your impressions, and then build on that foundation with a clearer understanding of what comes next.

Now, let’s discuss Ashlands.

The story continues

We have always wanted Windrose to be a survival adventure with a strong narrative layer, making the journey through its vast biomes feel meaningful.

In Ashlands, you can expect both the main story and side quests to grow significantly in scope.

This is where new factions enter the fray, and you’ll have to carve your way through their ambitions and schemes to continue your journey. Your hunt for the Obols continues, with the next fragment hidden somewhere among the ruins of a long-forgotten Spanish colony. The Obol’s power has twisted lands already ravaged by volcanic eruptions, making them more dangerous than ever. And let’s just say you’re not the only one searching for the artifact.

As we stated before, we’re working hard to make sure you’ll be able to continue your adventure and keep all the progress you’ve already achieved.

Buccaneers, refreshed — WIP
Updated costume concepts for the Buccaneer faction. Other factions are getting attention as well.

New armor on the horizon — WIP
A first look at concept work for possible character armor sets.

New biome: Ashlands

We are going to introduce a complete fourth biome: Ashlands. As the name suggests, it suffered from volcanic eruptions long ago, leaving its mark on the settlers who lived here, and on those who came after.

Uncover relics and secrets of the past, preserved under volcanic ash, but be prepared for those who may still guard these treasures. You can expect a variety of new islands with new enemies, items, resources, recipes, points of interest, and, of course, a new challenging boss. Brand-new factions will enter the stage, too, and you’ll be able to expand your collection with new armor and weapon variants.

We want every biome to feel and play differently, so on top of all the new content, we’re also looking into new biome mechanics to experiment with.

Building and bases

We were stunned by the number of amazingly creative builds you showcased, and we’ll happily expand this aspect of the game in Ashlands. We plan to introduce a plethora of new decorations, expand the existing building sets with useful new pieces, and work on a couple of QoL improvements.

Speaking of which, don’t forget to visit our community ideas page to vote for various requests and submit your own: https://windrose.support/ideas

We’re also happy to see that our camp NPCs were well received, so we’ll be looking to expand this system as well.

Ships

We feel that our ship gameplay has a lot of room for expansion, and we also have tons of your ideas and requests to draw from. It won’t be possible to tuck everything we’d like into one update, but we’ll surely experiment with and implement a few additions to this part of Windrose.

Here are a few things we’re looking into:

Enriching and deepening ship gameplay in ways inspired by both your feedback and our own plans

More ship classes, with at least one being added in Ashlands, plus more faction ship variants

Giving combat gameplay more care and attention

AI improvements, such as NPC ships behaving more naturally, sailing in formations, and so on

We are also aware of the popular request to add wind influence on sailing to the game. We’ll definitely be exploring this idea as well, and we originally intended to. But let us be crystal clear: we want it to be fun and simple. Windrose aims to be an adventure, without some of the more hardcore simulation aspects.

And, of course, expect more shanties! We were deeply touched by how well these were received. We don’t want to spoil everything, but your collection will be significantly expanded.

More ships for the seas — WIP
We're currently working on the Brigantine, Fluyt, and Galleon. While plans may change, we expect at least one of these ships to make its way into Ashlands.

Conclusion

That’s the general direction we’re taking with Ashlands. If you have any questions about the update, let us know in the comments. We’ll do our best to answer them in a future Q&A edition.

As always, we’ll be sharing more details, including an estimated release window, as development progresses. Thank you for your incredible support, and we’ll see you soon on the seas!

2,000,000 copies sold — huge milestone for our game, thanks to you! steam_community_announcements
Hey, captains!

Another incredible milestone in our journey — 2,000,000 brave souls have plunged into the Archipelago to live the swashbuckling life alongside us!

When we first set sail, we could only hope that our game would find such a passionate and dedicated community. Seeing so many of you exploring the seas, sharing your stories, creating content, reporting issues, and supporting us every step of the way means more than we can properly express.

Every screenshot, every stream, every review, every bug report, and every kind word has helped shape this adventure into something truly special. The Archipelago feels alive because of you.

In terms of development updates, we’re planning to release another patch soon to address several common issues reported by the community. After that, we begin full production on the next major update. We’re still discussing the scope of that update internally, so it will take some time before we can share more details. However, our goal remains the same: to continue expanding the experience in meaningful ways and make the wait worthwhile.

Thank you again, captains. This milestone is a new beginning for us, for the game, and for the community we’re building together. We are deeply touched by your support and will continue working hard to make this adventure worthy of your time and passion.

Fair winds and following seas,
Kraken Express

Patch Notes, version: 0.10.0.5.120-073042fb steam_community_announcements
Hey, captains! We’re rolling out a new Steam Cloud Saves update intended to fix the issue with corrupted saves. We’ll be closely monitoring your feedback and will respond accordingly if any issues arise.

Version: 0.10.0.5.120-073042fb

Save files improvements

Implemented a new storage and backup system for save files

The game now automatically backs up all data every 10 minutes of gameplay and upon exiting

Updated the save file structure for cloud synchronization to minimize syncing issues

Broken save files no longer block the game from loading

Data Recovery UI: If the latest save file for a world or character is found to be broken at startup, a special UI window will appear. Players can either quit the game (e.g., to attempt a cloud resync) or recover data from a backup. The game will automatically offer the latest available one

Save Migration System: Implemented a system to migrate old save files (pre-version 0.10.0.5.120-073042fb) to the new format. In most cases, this process is seamless and invisible

Migration Conflict Handling: If the game detects old, corrupted save files that cannot be properly migrated, a notification window will appear with information about the affected files and a prompt to delete them

Other updates

Fixed an issue where D-pad Left was incorrectly mapped to the "Take All" action in the crafting station UI

Updated the Wolf Head item icon

Known Issue

Characters created before version 0.10.0.4 cannot be deleted due to Steam Cloud synchronization. This is a known issue and will be fixed in a future update.

Your game settings will be reset after this patch. Please back them up manually if needed.

Patch Notes: Version 0.10.0.4.268-9d2ca277 steam_community_announcements
Ahoy, captains!
Thank you for your patience and support throughout our journey. In this update, we’ve focused on addressing some of the most commonly reported issues so far.
Among the changes, you’ll notice improved connection stability, reduced disk and CPU usage, and a variety of quality-of-life adjustments designed to make your overall experience smoother.
As for Steam Cloud Save fixes, they’re still on the way. After additional internal testing, we decided to give them more time to ensure everything works reliably before release.

Patch notes

Version: 0.10.0.4.268-9d2ca277

Important bits

• Added a new setting: Force Relay Connection. Doesn't work with Direct IP connections. Sometimes players are unable to connect directly to their friends’ games because P2P traffic is blocked along the route. This can happen for many reasons, such as router settings, ISP restrictions, firewall restrictions, and more. This option forces the use of our relay servers instead of a direct P2P connection, which can improve stability at the cost of higher latency (ping)

• Fixed a bug that caused connection issues for players with non-English Windows usernames

• Fixed unnecessary CPU usage on idle servers and clients

• Disk usage during gameplay has been reduced

• Several improvements to ship performance when hosting a server

• Fixed a rare crash caused by invalid inventory slot IDs

• Fixed a crash that occurred when killing Drowned with ship cannon fire

• Reduced the crafting cost of a wide range of building pieces across all building sets (this applies to construction costs, not vendor prices)

New stuff

• Added around 40 missing wall triangle pieces for various roof angles

• Added 3 missing floor triangle pieces to different building sets

• Added 4 new Seedbed variations

• Added new sound effects for when crops transition between growth stages

• Added new sounds for harvesting grown plants at your farm

• Added audio cues for Drowned ranged attacks; they now yell before hurling a projectile

• Added new visual effects for when crops transition between growth stages

• Added new visual effects for harvesting grown plants at your farm

• Bonfire ambient music track has been extended by 3 minutes

• Ship travel ambient track has been extended by 40 seconds

Interface

• Fixed FrameGen stuttering that occurred when closing the inventory or map

• Fixed a video memory (VRAM) spike when opening certain UI windows

• The Disassembly station no longer displays equipped items in the list

• Fast travel markers will now appear on the top layer of the map when fast travel is available

• Fixed remapping issues for the O and L keys

• Arrow key inputs no longer rotate the character camera

• Mouse inversion now correctly affects ship and ship battery controls

• Sensitivity settings now correctly affect aiming with ranged weapons

• The "\" tag will no longer appear in the journal if the shared progress setting is disabled

• Added remapping support for more actions: secondary interactions, inventory management, HUD toggle, etc

• Two-handed firearm controls can now be remapped as well

• The "Hide UI" toggle now only hides the HUD and no longer affects the inventory, journal, or other menus

• Added a dedicated setting to adjust safe zones for widescreen monitors

• Fixed a bug where settings could change value even if not directly hovered over by the gamepad cursor

• Fixed a mapping issue for accented letters

• Improved support for accented letters in player and ship names. We are working on expanding our custom font to natively support more languages soon

Building & Terraforming fixes and improvements

• Decorative Canopies now count as roofs for crafting station requirements

• Fixed cases where digging under a tree could cause it to "hang in the air"

• Fixed a bug that allowed players to dig under Divi stumps or certain trees in swamps

• Fixed the shovel flatten tool, it now correctly uses the ground under the character's feet as a baseline

• Building integrity now correctly recalculates if a destructible object used as a support is destroyed

• Fixed a bug that caused Crocodile sculptures (Jolly Crocodile Sculpture, Wise Crocodile Sculpture)  to levitate slightly

• Fixed clipping issues with 26-degree Mahogany stairs

• Fixed snapping issues for 26-degree roof corners in the Jungle Survivor set

• Fixed collision issues for 26-degree and 45-degree railings, they can now be correctly placed on foundations and floors

• Fixed square pillar collisions (existing player-built structures should not be affected)

• Fixed the visual offset for pier pillars (existing player-built structures should not be affected)

• Signal Fire now has the correct collision preset (you can now walk over it)

• Saplings can now be planted with higher density (reduced spacing requirements)

• Signal Fire now shares the Comfort buff with other fire-related entities. Pier decorations now correctly provide their own Comfort bonus

• Fixed a bug that occasionally made certain building blocks indestructible

Other bug fixes and improvements

• Improved the drop rate for Tainted Bile

• Hardwood drop rate increased by approximately 20%

• Ship disassembly now requires the player to have enough inventory space (or a nearby chest) to store all returned resources, preventing item loss

• Fixed the Boar's second strike combo animation: it now has a clearer telegraph but a longer reach. Be careful!

• Fixed the Alpha Wolf's bleed effect, it now correctly applies only at the end of the grapple

• Bleed damage will no longer affect players while they are being grappled

• Fixed a visual bug with the Outnumbered effect while it is active

• Fixed a bug where the "Special Attack" damage bonus on jewelry did not work, it now correctly applies to all \ attacks

• Fixed several ore respawn bugs, ores should now always respawn correctly

• Cycling through shanties will now always result in a different song

• Fixed several audio issues that occurred while using the F-camera on a ship

• Ship crew barks (voice lines) can now be heard even when using the F-camera

• Weapons are now correctly unequipped if the player removes a backpack containing them

• Fixed several ship interaction animations that caused sailors to clip into objects

• Fixed distorted visuals for several weapons on low graphics settings

• Grass will no longer be removed when planting trees or shrubs

• Grass will no longer be removed under piers and wharves

• Updated the Wolf Head Trophy model and textures

• Fixed fireplace visuals

• Fixed clay wall textures

• Slightly updated smelter visuals

• Fixed bean sapling visuals, vines should now correctly attach to the wooden supports

• Improved the visibility of decorative beams for the Old World and Lost Tribe sets

Windrose devs ask for some grace as they prepare to set sail towards a six month wait for the next big update rps
Windrose has been out for a couple of weeks now and seems to be doing more than alright for itself. I guess the people like pirates? Good news for those You Be Soft guys, I suppose. But as much success as Windrose has found itself in, it is also an early access game, which means the aforementioned people crave a nebulous sense of More. Developer Kraken Express do plan on offering More, but it sounds like the people will have to wait for it a little while.
